When emotions arise, it can be overwhelming and difficult to cope. However, the best thing you can do is to embrace your feelings and take the emotional journey. Taking the time to acknowledge what you are feeling and why will help you move through difficult times more quickly.
Start by identifying how you are feeling. Be mindful of physical sensations in your body that may accompany your emotions: tightness in your chest or a lump in your throat? Maybe sadness related to a past event is causing tears? Allow yourself to experience these inner-feelings without judgement.
Once identified, think about the cause of this emotion – was it something someone said or did, a memory of an incident that happened long ago, or simply an accumulation of stress throughout the day? Take the time to reflect on where that feeling is coming from and why it is arising now.
Rather than resist or ignore these feelings, get curious about them. Notice what emotions are present and how they move through your body. Acknowledge that every emotion has a purpose and can teach you something if you pay attention.
It’s also important to remember that all emotions, both positive and negative, pass with time. When we keep this in mind, it can be easier to let ourselves feel without fear or judgement. Once you understand why these feelings have arisen, it becomes easier to respond rather than react to the situation
