It can be really tough to move on from something that we feel guilty or ashamed about. We beat ourselves up, wondering how we could have been so stupid/careless/thoughtless, and the cycle of self-loathing can be hard to break out of. If you’re stuck in this negative mindset, it’s important to remember that everyone makes mistakes – even successful, smart people. What’s important is learning from your mistake and taking steps to ensure that it doesn’t happen again.
Secondly, try to remember that the thing you’re beating yourself up about is in the past. You can’t change it, no matter how much you wish you could. All you can do is learn from it and move on. Beating yourself up isn’t going to help anything – in fact, it will only make things worse. So instead of dwelling on your mistake, focus on what you can do to improve your current situation.
And finally, don’t forget to be kind to yourself. Just as you would comfort a friend who was going through a similar situation, extend that same compassion to yourself. Accepting that you’re not perfect and giving yourself grace will help you to move on from your mistake more quickly and easily.
So cut yourself some slack, and focus on the future. You’ve got this!
